wow, that's some awful advice. if the download you have is a collection
of files that looks like this -

someshow.r01
someshow.r02
someshow.r03
someshow.rar
someshow.sfv

then that's is called a rar archive, an archive being a collection of one
or more files. one of the best free programs for dealing with rar archives
is called 7-zip and they have a .org website. google it. once you install
7-zip, you'll have to do one more thing, only this once, to be able to easily
double click the .rar file and unpack the archive, and that is you right click
on the .rar file and choose "open with..." and then choose 7-zip from the list
that pops up (or browse for it if it's not on the list, the file called
7zfm.exe which is their file manager) but before choosing ok, be sure to
check the checkbox to always open that type of file with that app. the .sfv
file is not part of the rar archive per se, but is rather a checksum file for
being double sure the files downloaded properly. if you use bittorrent to get
the file and you let it complete the download 100%, then you will never need
the .sfv file, because bittorrent does it's own internal file verification of
every byte you download.

as far as codecs and players go, it's well known that ffdshow and media player
classic are about all you need. i used to use vlc myself, but it's not as good.
nowadays, however, there's a group of diehards who are going to the ends of the
earth to be sure you have a complete set of codecs, splitters, and players that
work nearly flawlessly together and play anything you throw at them. that
group is called the combined community codec pack. it includes media player
classic, zoom player, and only the most stable codecs. highly recommended,
especially if you're into things with subtitles, etc. i wouldn't touch that
kazaa-lite crap with your 10 foot pole.

it's also possible to get files that look like:

someshow.001
someshow.002
someshow.003

that's just another rar archive. open it with 7zip.
